Journal 01

Sat Jul 18, 2009, 9:09 AM
Not very creative with the titles, eh?

Greetings, whomever may be reading this! This would be my first journal entry. And I have been here for what? 2 years? Yep... I'm not much of a talker... But I guess I should gather my oppinions on the journal rather than leave scattered comments.

Sometimes I do muster the courage to comment where I feel like I have to. But the artist comments on my deviations may seem a little... contrived. Still, I need to know people's opinion on whatever I posted on this site. No one seems to be inclined though... I guess I have no connections, so I'm just talking to myself...

So, since I am still here, I want to explain a bit about Anteal, the world I am building. My primary inspiration was Felarya, :iconkarbo:'s fantasy world.

Initially Felarya, was just a world where the voraphiles would enjoy themselves, its nature as an inter-dimensional crossroad serving to allow any fantasy or sci-fi elements to wander into it and wind up getting eaten by the giantess monster-girl inhabitants. But something happened. The world's nature as a dimensional crossroads and a harsh untameable wilderness where, as Karbo says humans "are but a piece of food in the eyes of big predators and not god's creature any more", started appealing to non-voraphiles as well. I was one of those non-voraphiles. His fans were thus able to expand Felarya into a veritable fantasy world with its own locations, races, fauna, flora, etc. What I'm saying is that what was initially a world based around a fetish became a legitimate fantasy world.

I want to do the same thing with Anteal, except where Felarya focused on vore, Anteal is based more on the monster-girls themselves. By this I mean that Anteal has a presence of half-human half-animal species (yes species, not race) that are always female and want to do it with human men if you know what I mean. Species such as naga, mermaids, ceceliae, driders (To Felarya Fans: yes, drider with a single 'd', I mean, seriously, do you believe an extra 'd' would set them apart from other depictions?), centaurs, slimes; maybe I'll add more. Now for the fleshing-out-of-the-world part. This is what "worldbuilding" is all about. This includes creating the geography, history, species, nations, countries, cultures, languages, etc. of the world. With Anteal, I want to do this while also adressing certain tropes, especially in fantasy, eventhough Anteal is a near-futuristic setting. Tropes like:

- "One Race, One Culture" - I'll try to give a each species several different cultures, maybe not completely original but at least they'll have some degree of diversity. Not just in humans. So for example I have a specific design for the northern nagas from Onselth(a blend of Dacian, Japanese and Nuu-chah-nulth), while those living in Nao Da Maore (Great Northern Barrier) will be more Inuit-like. Steppe centaurs within Jun are more Mongol-like along with others living in Urba have a more modern look. Mermaids and cecaeliae in one part of the Great Ocean are different from ones in another part. You get the idea. The cultures are not set in stone either. Exchanges of ideas can occur. The Shen ("Desert naga") are the most widespread species besides humans, and are known for adopting foreign cultures during their travels.

- "Medieval European Fantasy" - Maybe you've noticed, in almost every fantasy setting has at least the central human faction(s) have medieval european aesthetics. I'll see how much I can avoid this aesthetic. In fact, I'll draw inspiration from all other ages and cultures: tribal, ancient, dark, imrerial, industrial, steampunk, modern and digital age; phoenician, israelite, egyptian, persian, greek, roman, mongol, chinese, norse, mesoamerican, tupi, nuu-chah-nuulth, and other cultures. Heck, the closest I'll get to Medieval European would be the Wesens and Weisi who were once pretty much like musket-wielding dark-age warriors(more on that later).

- "Medieval Stasis" - Although Anteal is a near-future setting, it wasn't always like that. Technology and cultures evolve. For examples, holographic projectors are becoming even more popular now because of the invention of more reliable projectors, so a projection dosen't get disrupted as easily as before. I mentioned previously of avoiding the medieval european aesthetic. Well, I'm planning a history for Anteal. A history that dosent include that aforementioned aesthetic. Anteal's map would change overtime as new states appear, conquer, get conquered themselves or even simply dissapear.

Well, that's it for my little rant.
